Home Styling 101: How to Make a Loft Feel Like Home

Lofts are characterized by industrial architectural features, high ceilings and plenty of windows.
Downsizing lifestyles are on trend these days, and for good reason! The advantages of the simplified lifestyle include decreased carbon footprints, financial freedom and uncluttered living. Less maintenance, more of what means most to you.

While lofts are sought-after spaces for city living but the features that make them great also pose a few challenges. Ensuring visual flow, creating privacy and generally decorating it to make the space feel cozy and inviting are key in making your loft feel like home.

Here’s how implement these characteristics and make any loft truly feel like home:

Keep things minimalist and stick to the essentials.

This is a great rule to keep in mind throughout the entire design process, but especially in loft bedrooms which, with the wrong design elements, can feel small and closed. Crisp white walls that extend to the ceiling, paired with a low-profile bed, makes the compact space feel much larger.

To ensure your home feels comfortable and “homey,” make sure the furniture is appropriately scaled to the space.

In other words, if you’re downsizing, it isn’t just the home itself that should get smaller. Consider investing in smaller furniture to fit the scale of your new, slightly smaller home.

Use rugs to define your rooms and areas in a loft.

This is a great way to add texture and comfort while delineating the spaces that serve different purposes in your home.

While opting for a light-coloured scheme, you really can't beat white!

With the power to make loft rooms feel larger and lighter, white is your greatest ally when making your loft a home. That said, it needs to be balanced out to prevent your shades of white from feeling too clinical. Try to pair lighter colours with warm woods and the occasional soft furnishing in a deeper shade to ensure the room feels cozy and welcoming.

Home Styling 101: Creating a Focal Point

Urban Presentations’ Senior Property Stylist Caroline Roussy’s latest project.

A focal point can instantly draw your eye in and help to enhance the aesthetic of any room. The focal point, also known as the feature of a room, is the area that the eye is naturally drawn to upon entering. The purpose of a focal point is to draw you into the space, making it feel welcoming and inviting you in.

If you want to create a focal point in your living space but are unsure of where to start, look no further! Here are our favourite ways to create a focal point in any living space:

Fireplaces

Fireplaces are often placed on the far side of a room, drawing your eyes in. We love how the brick fireplace above gives us a warm welcome into that living room. Fireside hot cocoa, anyone?

Artwork

Choosing the right piece of art can be a great way to build a feature into any space. You’ll want to select a piece that stands out on its own or consider adding some accessories in the same area.

Statement mirrors

A statement mirror is a perfect way to create a focal point. Decorative, functional, and bouncing light around to make a room feel brighter and more open, mirrors make are one of our favourite strategic pieces.

Standout furniture

Choosing a single piece of standout furniture for your living room is a guaranteed way to create a focal point that will add interest to the space. You truly can’t go wrong using your favourite piece of standout furniture as a focal point.

Feature walls

A feature wall is another way to create a focal point in any space. Be careful, though! Too many features result in the eye jumping from spot to spot without resting on any particular item or area. If feature walls are your focal point of choice, take our advice and stick to just one. More than one feature wall can leave the eye jumping around, defeating the purpose of a focal point.

Home Styling 101: How to Decorate a Room With a View

Staging by Urban Presentations’ Senior Property Stylist Roya Akbari.

If you are lucky enough to find yourself submerged in a dream view like this, you’ll want to do it justice! Here are our top tips on how to decorate a room with a view:

Less is more! Keeping your room design airy and uncomplicated is key. This way, the eye will be drawn to the beautiful view outside without distractions taking away from your incredible view. Here’s how to keep it simple and airy to let your view take centre stage:

  • Stick with an open layout and limit the use of furniture and accessories. This will keep the eye on the prize (AKA that gorgeous view) and away from any distractions.

  • Keep the view unobstructed. In line with having an open layout, it’s important to keep larger pieces out of the way when making the most of a room with a view.

  • Be neutral! Colour schemes play an important role in the design of a room with a view. Giving your view a neutral colour scheme gives the view a chance to be a true centrepiece. This will allow your surrounding furnishings to compliment, but not take away from, that gorgeous view.
